Peanut CRSP

This project aims to:

  • reduce levels of aflatoxin (a toxin resulting from a fungal activity which is prone to over-developing in tropical conditions)

  • improve income for rural families

  • help create safer products for local consumption

  • improve policy

  • improve knowledge through training

The project studies aflatoxin and its relation to women because:

  • Women are frequently peanut farmers or small-scale peanut-food processors.

  • There is a lack of local knowledge about aflatoxin risks.

  • Poorly stored legumes, grains, and nuts create a favorable environment for aflatoxin contamination.

  • Aflatoxin levels in the body can cause: liver cancer, vitamin A deficiency, and can suppress one’s immune response.
