AMAREW Under AMAREW, women are constructing energy-efficient stoves which they are then able to sell. They also train others in how to use them. These stoves increase efficiency up to three times over conventional wood fires and reduce firewood collection by over 50%. Women who make these stoves are reimbursed for their original loan for stove construction, and each has made a substantial profit. In addition, Virginia Tech Extension oversees an outreach program that provides safe drinking water to over 200 households. This program provides technical assistance in the development of curriculum and pedagogical techniques for a new program for women extension agents in Ethiopia.
