PES Associate Award

Payments for Environmental Services Programs Associate Award

The SANREM CRSP received an Associate Award from USAID/EGAT to conduct a study of payments for environmental services (PES) programs in developing countries in collaboration with the BASIS CRSP. The study:

  • expanded the SANREM Knowledgebase to consolidate information on PES projects in developing countries
  • developed regional reviews of payments for hydrologic services in Africa, Latin America, and South Asia. The review papers characterize regional approaches to program objectives and illustrate how those objectives shape program design, contexts, and conditions across the regions, including design elements, challenges, and effectiveness. Drafts of the regional reviews were presented at the global Payments/Rewards for Environmental Services Workshop in Lombok, Indonesia, in January 2007
  • developed a series of case studies on successful PES programs in the three regions
  • worked with the BASIS CRSP to develop a PES Sourcebook training manual for USAID personnel, and
  • sponsored policy seminars on PES Programs for USAID personnel.

SANREM researchers participating in this study included Paul Ferraro of Georgia State University, Gerald Shively of Purdue University, Douglas Southgate of Ohio State University, Marjorie Huang of Winrock International, Sven Wunder of CIFOR, and Theo Dillaha of Virginia Tech. Key BASIS scientists were John Kerr and Rohit Jindal of Michigan State University, and Michael Carter of the University of Wisconsin. The USAID CTO for this project was Michael Colby.
