Agricultural development is
essential for improved well-being in rural Ecuador. As much as 40 percent of the
population relies on agriculture as its primary source of income and
agricultural exports account for a significant proportion of foreign exchange
revenue. In the highlands, potatoes are a major staple, and more than 90,000
producers grow them on about 60,000 hectares of land. Potato production is
associated with heavy use of chemical inputs such as pesticides and fertilizers.
