Peanut CRSP
This project aims to:
reduce levels of aflatoxin (a toxin resulting from a fungal activity which is prone to over-developing in tropical conditions)
-
improve income for rural families
-
help create safer products for local consumption
-
improve policy
-
improve knowledge through training
The project studies aflatoxin and its relation to women because:
Women are frequently peanut farmers or small-scale peanut-food processors.
-
There is a lack of local knowledge about aflatoxin risks.
-
Poorly stored legumes, grains, and nuts create a favorable environment for aflatoxin contamination.
-
Aflatoxin levels in the body can cause: liver cancer, vitamin A deficiency, and can suppress one’s immune response.
