Dr. Turekian met with ERA scientific partners to exchange ideas about science, innovation, and development. He toured ITA and ISRA, focusing on the Joint Microbiology Lab. Turekian urged researchers to continue their important community-engaged scientific work, because according to him, “we are in an age where scientific knowledge is a source of power.”

Revitalization of agriculture in Senegal is critical to ensuring that the country can feed itself. While 75 percent of Senegal’s 13 million people are employed in the agricultural sector, the country still imports 70 percent of its rice. By taking the lead in this important project, Virginia Tech is doing its part in the fight against hunger worldwide.
