Resource Guide: Finding Scholarships for Study Abroad
Virginia Tech's Education Abroad
office has produced an updated
guide to finding scholarships for study abroad. The current
edition was revised in October 2006. Much of the information
contained in this guide appears on this page, but the guide also
provides a list of useful strategies for finding scholarships
and sources of funding. Come speak with us in 1820 Litton Reaves
Hall if you have questions.
Education Abroad/OIRED scholarships
Virginia Tech students participating
in credit-bearing education abroad programs
may apply for these scholarships. The
deadline for submission of all application materials is Friday
March 30, 2007 for education-abroad programs taking
place in Summer or Fall 2007 or Academic Year 2007-2008. The
deadline for submission of all application materials is
Friday October 26, 2007 for education-abroad programs
taking place in Spring 2008 or Calendar Year 2008. Students can access the

ACC International Scholars scholarships
Virginia Tech students participating
education abroad programs
during 2007 are invited to apply for one of five $1000 scholarships.
Three scholarships will be awarded in the October 2006
application round (primarily for Spring Semester 2007 programs),
and two scholarships will be awarded in the March 2007
application round (primarily for Fall Semester 2007 and
full-year programs). The
deadlines for submission of all application materials are
Friday October 20, 2006 and Friday March 30, 2007. A complete application consists of
a completed application form, a one-page essay, a one-page
letter of reference from a Virginia Tech faculty, and complete
transcripts (official or unofficial). Students can access the

Need-based VT scholarships
Virginia Tech students participating
in a program in residence at the Center for
European Studies and Architecture (CESA) in Riva San Vitale,
Switzerland, are eligible to apply
for a need-based award. Students applying for a need-based
scholarship must also file a FAFSA with the Virginia Tech Office
of Financial Aid and Scholarships. You may access the appropriate
application form here:
College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) Study Abroad
scholarship
Virginia Tech students who have a major housed in the College of
Agriculture and Life Sciences are invited to apply for a scholarship to support a study abroad experience that is being
sponsored by the College. CALS students in good academic
standing and with an overall GPA of 2.5 or higher should
apply on or before
Friday October
20,
2006.
The student's education abroad program must take place before
the end of summer
2007. Applications will be assessed based on the merit of the
scholarship application.

College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences scholarships
If
you have a major housed in the College of Liberal Arts and Human
Sciences, you are invited to apply for a scholarship sponsored
by the College. CLAHS students in good academic standing should
apply on or before November 1, 2006. Preference is given to
students who are studying abroad on programs sponsored by CLAHS.
The College has one application cycle per year, and students can
apply even before being official accepted into a program. The
student's overseas academic program must take place in spring,
summer, or fall 2007. Contact the CLAHS Undergraduate Academic
Affairs Office, 238 Wallace Hall.

Non-VT scholarships
ISEP, non-VT
programs, and some Bilateral sites, such as Soonchunhyang
University in Korea, offer small grants and scholarships to
their participants. Check out non-VT program websites or
come into the Education Abroad Office for more details. Barbara
Cowles of the Honors Program coordinates the Fulbright
scholarship. This, along with the NSEP Program, Rotary
Scholarship Program, Freeman Asia, and the Gilman Scholarship,
are excellent opportunities for students.
AIFS
Scholarship Programs AIFS offers a
variety of scholarships for semester-long and summer programs. Academic
Year Scholarships
Summer Scholarships
American Association of University Women The largest source of funding exclusively for graduate women
in the world, the AAUW supports aspiring scholars around the
globe, teachers and activists in local communities, women at
critical stages of their careers, and those pursuing professions
where women are underrepresented.
American InterContinental University Scholarships available for students studying in London and
Dubai.
Association of Commonwealth Universities Provides lists of scholarships and fellowships to and from
over 480 universities drawn from the Commonwealth countries of
Africa and Asia, Australasia and the South Pacific, Canada and
the Caribbean, the United Kingdom, Cyprus and Malta.
AWC Sweden
The
scholarship, which is based on academic excellence, is awarded
in the form of a travel grant for $1,500. The grant was
initiated to cover the cost of a round-trip airplane ticket
between the US and Sweden. In order to qualify for the AWC
Scholarship, you must be an American female citizen and accepted
for a period of study or research at a Swedish educational
institute.

Bridging Scholarships for Study in Japan
Funding from private
foundations and major U.S. corporations has made it possible to
award 100 scholarships annually to assist students with the
travel and living expenses they will incur while studying abroad
in Japan.
British Council Funding and scholarship information for study in the United
Kingdom.
Council ISP Scholarships
This is a list of
CIEE
Student Scholarship Programs for Education Abroad, including
John E. Bowman Travel Grants, Robert B. Bailey Scholarship,
Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE)
Scholarships, Department of Education Scholarships for Programs
in China, and the Jennifer Ritzmann Scholarship for Studies in
Tropical Biology.
Cultural
Experiences Abroad (CEA) Scholarship Program
This is a
list that includes CEA's own scholarship programs as well as
some others.
Deutscher Akademischer
Austauschdienst (DAAD)
German Academic Exchange Service - association of the
institutions of higher education in the Federal Republic of
Germany, whose goal is to promote closer international relations
among universities and other institutions of higher education,
especially through the exchange of individual students and
scholars.
Fastweb
This is a very popular American college
scholarship database. Registration required (no-fee).
Freeman-ASIA Program
The
primary goal of the Freeman-ASIA Award Program is to increase
the number of American undergraduate students who study in East
and Southeast Asia, by providing them with the information and
financial assistance they will need.
Fulbright Scholarships
For both
Americans going abroad and incoming foreign students. Grants are
made to citizens of participating countries, primarily for:
university teaching, advanced research, graduate study and
teaching in elementary and secondary schools.
Fulbright Scholarships
from the US-UK Educational Commission
The Fulbright
Program promotes peace and understanding through educational
exchange. Today, the Fulbright Program is one of the most
prestigious awards programs world-wide, operating in 144
countries and with 51 commissions.
The Benjamin A. Gilman
International Scholarship Program This program is sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and
Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State and
administered by the Institute of International Education. This
program seeks to lower barriers to undergraduate study abroad by
offering scholarships to students with financial need, and we
encourage those underrepresented in study abroad to apply. The
award is up to $5,000 for semester or academic year programs.

Institute of Turkish
Studies (ITS) Founded and incorporated in the District of Columbia in 1982
and currently located at the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign
Service of the Georgetown University, the oldest and largest
school of international affairs in the country, the Institute of
Turkish Studies (ITS) is the only non-profit, private
educational foundation in the United States that sports the
development of Turkish Studies in American higher education.
Institute for
the International Education of Students (IES) IES commits more than $1 million each year to merit and
need-based scholarships.

Information on Fellowship Programs and Student Loans in Latin

International
Education Financial Aid (IEFA)
IEFA is
an Internet resource for financial aid information for
students wishing to study in a foreign country. At this site,
you will find a searchable list of grants,
scholarships, loan programs, and other information to assist
students in their pursuit to study abroad.
International Education Finance
Corporation In this time of globalization and increased desire to study
abroad, the International Education Finance Corporation (IEFC)
has developed a range of international student loan programs for
the growing population of students who wish to study in foreign
countries.
International Partnership for Service-Learning Scholarships IPSL offers a variety of scholarships for
participants in their programs.
International Student Exchange Program (ISEP) Scholarships ISEP offers the following scholarships:
International Studies Abroad Scholarships
for students studying abroad through ISA.
George J. Mitchell Scholarships Scholars are
eligible to attend institutions of higher learning in Ireland,
including the seven universities in the Republic of Ireland and
the two universities in Northern Ireland, for one academic year
of post-graduate study.
NAFSA Grants and Scholarships These include ASEAN Student Assistance Awards Program (ASAAP),
Korean Student Assistance Awards Program (KSAAP) and Rhys
Glynn-Jones Memorial South Pacific Scholarship Program.

Undergraduate Scholarships NSEP offers undergraduate scholarships to
encourage U.S. citizens to undertake graduate-level study of
language, cultures, and world regions that are critical to U.S.
interests. . The maximum award is $8000 for a summer,
$10,000 for a semester, or $20,000 for a full academic year. Steve
is the on-campus representative for the program. Interested students should
speak with Steve. The on-campus application deadline for
the 2007-2008 application cycle is January 30, 2007.
National Security Education

has created a new set of graduate fellowships to encourage U.S. citizens
to undertake graduate-level study of language, cultures, and
world regions that are critical to U.S. interests. Steve

Phil Kappa Phi
Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Grants exist
to recognize scholarly endeavors. They are designed specifically
to recognize and assist undergraduates as they seek knowledge
abroad. Thirty-eight grants, valued at $1,000 each, are awarded
annually.
RMIT
International
RMIT is
a program in Melbourne, Australia, which offers scholarships to
international students.
Rotary Foundation Scholarships
The Ambassadorial
Scholarships Program of the Rotary Foundation is the world's
largest privately funded international scholarships program.
More than 1,200 scholarships were awarded for study in 2000-01.

grants and other forms of financial assistance. It's free,

Harry S. Truman Scholarship
Foundation
Awards
merit-based scholarships to college students who plan to pursue
careers in government or elsewhere in public service, and wish
to attend graduate or professional school to help prepare for
their careers. Truman Scholars participate in leadership
development programs and have special opportunities for
internships and employment with the federal government.
U.S. Department of Education Student Guide The most comprehensive resource on student financial aid from
the U.S. Department of Education. Grants, loans, and work-study
are the three major forms of student financial aid available
through the Department's Student Financial Assistance office.
U.S. Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) fosters
mutual understanding between the United States and other
countries through international educational and training
programs.
