Travel Resources

Airplanes

Ask your travel agent about special prices and packages when making your travel plans. Consider an open jaw ticket that lets you fly into one city and return from another. Also be sure to consider getting a flight with a flexible return date, or one with little or no fee for changing your return date. Students often decide to extend their stay for a month or so beyond the end of the semester. If you are traveling to Australia, ask your travel agent about the Boomerang air pass for reduced airfare in and around Australia. The following companies offer student airfare rates:          AESU Travel          STA Travel          Student Universe          Orbitz          Travelocity          BestFares          Expedia          Priceline          Site59

Always reconfirm your seat three days before your intended departure. Be sure to do this for both your initial departure and return flight. Because of increasing airport security, check in two or three hours before your departure time for international flights. Keep your tickets in a safe place. Lost or stolen tickets are not easy to replace, especially from overseas. Know the fare you paid, flight and ticket numbers, and the travel dates. Ask your travel agent about baggage weight restrictions and customs limits. If you have too many bags or are over baggage weight restrictions, the airline will charge you additional fees.

Also, look into air travel as a means of visiting neighboring countries while abroad. Often, special airfares are offered that are less expensive than trains or buses. Some popular companies in Europe are Easy Jet and RyanAir.

Trains

Contact a travel agent about special package travel deals on trains. Popular passes include Eurail, Britrail, France Rail, Spain Flexipass, European East, and Japan Rail. If you are considering purchasing one of these passes, make sure you review the policies and rules of the pass, and also be sure that it fits your traveling needs, ability, and style. These passes can be expensive, so do not purchase one unless you are certain you'll use it. Often it is less expensive to just get a student travel card and travel at your leisure, with no rules or specific date restrictions.
