Before you
depart, please be sure you have:
1 Obtained
credit
approval through your academic
advisor, including filling out and submitting the "Permission
to Take Courses Elsewhere" form. Keep a copy for your
files!

Submitted a copy of
your study abroad program acceptance letter to the Education
Abroad Office (non-VT programs only).

Verified your health insurance information and submitted the
Health
Insurance Certificate to the Education Abroad
Office.
Also, consider
purchasing insurance for personal liability, property loss, trip
cancellation, etc. Be informed of health and safety issues in
the country abroad.

Submitted other required forms to the Education Abroad
office: 1)
Emergency Contact Form,
2)
Program Liability Agreement,
and 3)
Authorization for Release of Information.
We cannot release any information to your loved ones without the
latter form on file.

Received your passport and visa. Make two copies of the picture
page of your passport. Leave one copy with your parents. Take
the other copy with you abroad, and store it separate from your
passport.

Made all payments to Virginia Tech or your sponsoring
institution or program.

Met with your financial aid advisor, and completed, signed and
submitted the
Study
Abroad Documentation Form (if
applicable).

Arranged your Virginia Tech
registration for the time you will be
abroad. Do not sign up for Virginia Tech courses for the
semester you will be abroad unless you are attended a Tech-run
program. If you have signed up, fill out a
withdraw form from the Registrar's Office.

Planned out your courses with your academic advisor for the
semester you return, so that you have less to think about when
online registration rolls around.
10 Made arrangements for
room and board (when applicable). Submit all necessary paperwork
to your host institution abroad for housing. Notified Virginia
Tech Residential & Dining Programs of your plans to leave and/or
return to on-campus housing. Alternatively, secure
off-campus housing for your return
semester at VT or find a student to sublease while you are
abroad.

Purchased your airfare.

Attended
the Pre-Departure Orientation held at Virginia Tech by the
Education Abroad Office. You must inform the Education Abroad
Office if you cannot attend, because you need forms and
information from this event.

Had a physical,
dental checkup, eye examination, inoculations, etc. Pack all
medications, prescriptions, extra eye contacts, saline solution,
etc. for the entire duration away. For more information, visit
the
Center for Disease Control.

Left your
international address with our office, you academic advisor, and
your parents.

Organized money for your travel; bought
an international calling card. Additional calling cards can
usually be purchased cheaper in the host country.
16
Ensured
that one parent holds a valid U.S. passport in case of an
emergency. Arrange for power of attorney (as needed).
